Kroger offers double fuel points during the summer

Double fuel points will begin Memorial Day weekend and continue through the summer driving season. Kroger customers can earn double fuel points on regular grocery purchases every time they shop Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until September 1st.

A digital coupon is available to customers beginning this week for download through Kroger’s mobile app or online here. The first coupon will be valid for every weekend from May 24th through June 30th, with subsequent monthly coupons appearing later for a limited time. “Based on our customers’ response to last year’s summer fuel promotion, we know how much they appreciate saving money at the pump,” said Joe Bell, Manager of Marketing and Public Affairs for Kroger’s Delta Division.

The Memphis Area Association of Governments or (MAAG) was awarded the International Communicator Award of Distinction for the regional marketing campaign Day Trippin’. The campaign promotes unique attractions within a day car drive from Memphis.  The Communicator Award is presented annually by the International Academy of Visual Arts.

Five taken to hospital after morning crash

(WMC-TV) - A portion of New Allen Road in Raleigh was shut down for a short time Friday morning after two cars crashed into each other, injuring five people.

The crash happened just before 8 a.m.

"Cars were going southbound on New Allen when one car appeared to turn across in front of the other one causing the accident," said Col. Frank Garrett with the Memphis Police Department.

Shortly after the crash, victims were seen holding small children, walking around the neighborhood.

Memphis police say the rain slicked roads could have been the reason the Mercury Grand Marquis and the Nissan Altima crashed.

The Altima had a huge dent in the passenger side doors.

Memphis police originally reported several children had been ejected from one of these cars. However, it was later determined that was not the case.

City contractors and others indicted for illegal dumping

Retired Memphis Animal shelter employee Larry Brunson has been indicted along with Mable Sutton and Debra Nesbit.

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Past the family goats and around a rickety old barn is where prosecutors shut down a massive illegal dumping operation.

The investigation opened 18 months ago with an anonymous tip clamming contractors were dropping dump trucks full of refuse on a Frayser lot.

One neighbor said she has complained for three years.

"And they're dumping stuff in my neighborhood that could be harmful to me and the rest of us around here. And something should've been done about it long ago," said the neighbor who wished to remain unidentified.

Retired Memphis Animal shelter employee Larry Brunson has been indicted along with Mable Sutton and Debra Nesbit. Prosecutors said they charged a fee to allow their property to be used as a dumping ground.

The Shelby County Health Department (SCDH) has received confirmation of mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus (WNV) within the areas of ZIP code 38115.  Mosquitoes carrying WNV have been previously found in ZIP codes 38018, 38104, 38109, 38116, 38122, 38127, 38133, 38125, 38017, and 38141.

Since April the SCHD Vector Control Program has treated areas by applying larvicides to standing bodies of water. As an additional precaution, the SCHD will also conduct truck mounted spraying of EPA approved insecticides weather permitting, in portions specific ZIP codes according to the following schedule:

Stepson charged in Mother's Day cookout murder

DeAndre Lax, 29, is accused of murdering William Jones, 35, in the 3000 block of Townes Avenue.

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - A stepson who is charged with killing his stepfather at a family cookout on Mother's Day remains in jail on a $1 million bond.

DeAndre Lax, 29, is accused of murdering William Jones, 35, in the 3000 block of Townes Avenue.

Investigators said the family company turned bad during a Mother's day family gathering.

"It just made me sick to the stomach that somebody that I know on my street is gone," said Townes Avenue resident Dominique Lee. "And it's just one day you're here. Next day you're gone. That's just how it is."

Police said Jones was arguing with his three stepsons in the driveway. One had Jones on the ground. Lax allegedly shot Jones in the head.

Memphis city access cards to be used for pools

The cards, like city swimming pools and libraries, are free.

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - The City of Memphis is trying to make it easy for youngsters to, not only, find a cool air conditioned place to hang out and read, but also do a little swimming.

"We have 13 outdoor swimming pools that will start their summer season on June the 8 and those pools will operate through July the 27," said Joseph Lee with Memphis Parks and Neighborhoods.

City pools are free. This year citizens can go to the nearest library rather than stand in line to get a pool card.

"The card would be utilized not only for access to the library, but also to the city swimming facilities," said Lee. "And, what we want to do is really make swimming very comfortable for youth. We have a collaboration with Memphis Splash, and we're continue to encourage all of our youngsters to get exposed to swimming and learn to swim."

Adults may now use their regular library or passport card.
