District Attorney targets Frayser High School's truancy rate

MEMPHIS, TN-

(WMC-TV) - Parents, students and faculty attended an information workshop in the Frayser High School library Wednesday to address the issue of truancy.

School and community leaders said Frayser High School is the most truant school in Memphis.

Teresa Wyche's daughter is a student at Frayser High School.

"I'm here because she's been missing a lot of days out of school and I ended up talking to her yesterday about her tardiness and stuff like that," said Wyche.

District Attorney Amy Weirich said it is her job to enforce the state's truancy laws for students who miss five days of school without an excuse.

"The challenge, however, is to make sure you're doing everything as a parent that you can do," said Weirich.  "If you need police intervention or intervention from our office, that's what we're here for."

Hours long stand-off forces neighbors from homes

MEMPHIS, TN-

(WMC-TV) – Memphis police spent nearly eight hours  in a standoff  in the Raleigh Frayser area before it finally ended when the suspect injured himself and police were able to enter his home.

It all happened in the 3200 block of Ridgemont near New Allen Road and neighbors were pulled from their homes by officers for their own safety.

"It's disturbing because the school is like three seconds away," said resident Anetra Brown. "It's disturbing to say it happened right before three and the school lets out at three."

People in the neighborhood watched blue lights since just before three in the afternoon. Police say a man, who's reportedly armed, was holed up in a house with his wife inside. Despite the fact that the man has walked into different rooms, the woman did not escaped. Police negotiators were on the phone with him for much of the time trying to convince him to come out.

What's behind that restaurant's health score

Despite reporting Mid-South restaurants' health inspection scores every Thursday on Andy's Restaurant Scorecard, I continue to meet viewers who don't know restaurants are required to post those scores, whether it's Tennessee, Mississippi or Arkansas.

Establishments must post those scores someplace where customers can see them:  the entrance, cash register, bar, etc.

If they don't, it's a health code violation.

Mississippi's health department uses a letter-grade system:  A, B, C. No failures. They are white reports with large, green grades. Restaurants typically frame them for public inspection.

The restaurant inspectors of the Arkansas Department of Health don't employ a grading system at all. They just list the violations.
