Police looking for Payless Shoes thief

Memphis police say they need your help finding the gunman who robbed a Payless Shore Store last week.

Investigators say the man pretended to be a customer when he walked up to the counter at the store in the 2100 block of Frayser Blvd on Friday, Sept. 24. But once he reached the clerk, officers say he pulled out a silver handgun and demanded cash.

Police say the man is about 25-years-old and is 5’7”.

School funding, city budget on docket for town hall meeting

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton is hosting a virtual town hall meeting Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. on a pair of hot button topics.

Wharton will discuss both the city and budget and how the city plans to fund Memphis City Schools.

Methodist North holding health festival

Methodist North Hospital will provide free health screenings Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Patients will also have be able to ask doctors questions and be given free snacks. The hospital will also give away prizes and have games for kids.

Wharton, city leaders host town hall

People who call Raleigh home will get a chance to talk to city leaders during a town hall meeting next month.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, Councilman Bill Morrison and other city representatives will be at Greater Imani Church on Thursday, Oct.7 at 6:30 p.m.

The church is located at 3034 Austin Peay Hwy.

Saint Francis Hospital - Bartlett breaks ground on 96 bed expansion

Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett looks to the future with a groundbreaking for the hospital’s facility expansion.   The $34 million dollar project will result in 96 additional hospital beds for Bartlett and the surrounding area.  

The expansion will allow Saint Francis Hospital-Bartlett to double their current total of ICU beds and surgical suites.  In addition, ancillary services such as pharmacy and laboratory will be relocated and expanded.  Finally, with the addition of more than 83,000 square feet, Saint Francis-Bartlett will have space available to expand service lines to serve the growing needs of the community.

Get rid of your old prescriptions safely, legally

People can turn in their unwanted or expired prescriptions this weekend and make sure they’re disposed of properly.

“Unused medications fall into the wrong hands on a daily basis,” said a police representative in a written statement. “By disposing of your unused or expired prescriptions in a safe manner, it will ensure the safety of a loved one or someone in our community.”

The Drug Enforcement Agency is partnering with Memphis police and local Kroger stores in an effort to help curb prescription drug abuse by sponsoring the first Pill Take-Back Day.

Officers will be taking medicine at four Kroger stores around the city on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. People can turn in the drugs anonymously and the department says officers won’t ask any questions.

Craigmont debater takes top honors

After a record number of 168 debaters competed through four rounds, Middle College High School and Kingsbury High School took top honors.  The Middle College High School debate team of Danny Shields and William Tucker took first place at the Varsity level, while the Kingsbury High team of Ishmael Desalegne and Chasity Gowdy led the Junior Varsity Teams.

Top Varsity Speaker was Jessica Medders of Craigmont High School. Dawnisha Joiner of Whitehaven High School was named Top Speaker in the Junior Varsity Division.
