6-year-old sent to hospital after hit-and-run

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) - Six-year-old Jamarious Allen's mother hopes to have her son home by Easter. The little boy was hit by a car that fled the scene immediately following the accident.

Jamarious is now on the road to recovery at LeBonheur Children's Hospital.

"It was terrible. I thought he was dead laying on the ground," said his mother, Kendra Rodgers.

Rodgers has been at her son's bedside all day. He has fractured bones in his face and a bruised hip.

"He was just playing, running around with the other kids," she explained.

The driver of the car kept driving after he hit the little boy.

Police are still searching for a suspect.

"The driver of the car came and hit him, swerving in the street and the car just hit him," said Rodgers.

Memphis police say the driver was in a black primer Toyota Corolla with Tennessee license plates that read 737 YVG.

Church plans prayer rally on eve of KKK Rally

Raleigh Assembly of God is hosting a citywide prayer service this Friday. It is the day before the scheduled March 30 Downtown rally by the Loyal Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.

“The only agenda that we have for the night is that of unity and prayer,” said pastor Matt Anzivino.

“We are a multicultural church with a love for our city and are joining with our brothers and sisters of all races on that night to proclaim unity. There are many, many people in our great city that are saying 'enough is enough.' I sincerely believe that our city's diversity should be celebrated and that there is no better time to do that than while our diversity is under attack.”

Other congregations that have agreed to participate are Divine Life Church, Christ Community, Hope Assembly of God and Golden Gate Cathedral.

The “WE Are One” service begins at 6:30 p.m. in the main sanctuary at the church, 3683 Austin Peay. It is open to the entire community.

Mid-South teachers inspire educators nationwide

Fourth grade Teacher Comeshia Williams of Northaven Elementary

(WMC-TV) - A national teacher development program is showcasing Shelby County teachers and the good work they do in the classroom.

Fourth grade Teacher Comeshia Williams of Northaven Elementary and fifth grade teacher Michelle Sutton of Collierville's Crosswind Elementary have been chosen for a national professional development program for teachers.

It is called PD 360.

"As teachers, normally we want to just tell them everything, and show them everything, but this gets them to think through and come up with these decisions themselves," said Williams.

The teachers' advice and examples are now in front of more than 850,000 teachers nationwide.

"I'm not only teaching educational skills, but I am teaching social skills because we have to interact, and we have to talk and discuss, and work out the issues," said Sutton.
