Community baby shower gives to moms in need | Community Spirit
Expecting moms got a little help from the North Memphis community today.
A Better Memphis held their Fresh Starts Community Baby Shower.
The community baby shower began as an event aimed at reducing infant mortality in the Memphis community.
This is the fourth year of the event and now it's growing to also include empowerment for women.
"We give them prizes and gift bags when they leave here," said Tennessee State Reprentative Antonio Parkinson, one of the orgranizers.
"They have the equipment so their children get the opportunities and they can have a fresh start," he continued.
New moms received a lot of helpful information as well as a gift bag of items to help with their newborns.
"It's a blessing from God to be honest with you because it's a lot of people and a lot of teens and mothers out here that don't have parents, don't have family and just don't have that help that they really need," said new mom Nukesha Coleman.
Organizers said the goal is to give moms an understanding of their own value as well as the life they are bringing into the world.
