Pregnant woman escapes from police custody | Crime
(WMC-TV) – Moments after finding out that she was headed to jail, investigators say a pregnant woman escaped from police custody with the help of a mysterious passerby.
An apparently pregnant Glenda Lurry was pulled over by police late last month after she ran a red light near St. Elmo and Rangeline, according to court records. Lurry, police said, told the officer she ran the light because she was about to go into labor. The officer called for an ambulance and paramedics began treating Lurry.
However, dispatchers told the officer there were several warrants for the 35-year-old woman’s arrest.
But Lurry took the news that she was going to be arrested better than might have been expected. She refused further medical treatment and asked to be taken to jail instead of the hospital, investigators said.
As she stepped out of the ambulance, a maroon car pulled beside the vehicle and Lurry was able to hop inside and speed away with the driver.
Police weren’t able to find the vehicle and Lurry was on the run until she was finally arrested and booked into jail Monday.
It's unclear if the driver of Lurry's getaway car has been charged.
