PACE to host Safety Day for Kids

Memphis City School's Division of Parent and Community Engagement (PACE) is sponsoring a Safety Day for Kids.

This is an opportunity to teach children about fire safety and prevention, emergency preparedness during a storm or earthquake and stranger danger. Local firefighters, police officers, paramedics and McGruff the Crime Dog will be on hand to teach families techniques to avoid stranger danger and demonstrate life-saving methods to keep children safe. Parents will also receive fingerprinting kits and I.D. badges for children in case of an emergency.

What:   Safety Day for Kids

When:  Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

Suspect claims he was selling drugs to couple, not robbing them

(WMC-TV) - A robbery suspect's recent claim that he wasn't guilty of that crime, and had instead been conducting a drug deal, didn't help spring him from jail, according to court records.

Investigators say Michael Walton asked his victims for a ride around 10:45 p.m. on August 23. The victims told police that Walton pulled a pistol on them as they drove and demanded their money.

Police charge man with church burglary

(WMC-TV) - Police have charged a man with stealing thousands of dollars in audio equipment from a Memphis church earlier this year.

Investigators say Lajonte Kizer broke into Friendship Baptist Church, 1355 Vollintine Ave., in May. Kizer allegedly took microphones, headphones and mixers valued at almost $8,000 from the house of worship.

Man convicted of raping Frayser child

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping and molesting a 9-year-old girl several years ago.

James Clay Chesteen, 49, was convicted by a jury on Friday.

Officers searching for townhouse killer

Officers searching for townhouse killer

(WMC-TV) - Police are on the lookout for the person responsible for an overnight murder.

The victim was killed inside a Memphis town home in the 4900 block of Clinchstone Circle at the Sunridge Townhomes.

The man was 40-years-old and found shot inside his living room. He was taken to the Med where he was pronounced dead.

Several witnesses have been questioned, but no arrests have been made.

Alert witness helps police catch accused crooks

(WMC-TV) - A witness' keen eye helped police track down three men who are accused of stealing a strange collection of items from a woman's home this week.

Police say Jermel Clark, Lorenzo Caldwell and Frank Williams stole televisions, a computer, rolls of coins, jewelry and a blood pressure monitor from a home in the 4300 block of Sequoia Monday.
