Hours long stand-off forces neighbors from homes

MEMPHIS, TN-

(WMC-TV) – Memphis police spent nearly eight hours  in a standoff  in the Raleigh Frayser area before it finally ended when the suspect injured himself and police were able to enter his home.

It all happened in the 3200 block of Ridgemont near New Allen Road and neighbors were pulled from their homes by officers for their own safety.

"It's disturbing because the school is like three seconds away," said resident Anetra Brown. "It's disturbing to say it happened right before three and the school lets out at three."

People in the neighborhood watched blue lights since just before three in the afternoon. Police say a man, who's reportedly armed, was holed up in a house with his wife inside. Despite the fact that the man has walked into different rooms, the woman did not escaped. Police negotiators were on the phone with him for much of the time trying to convince him to come out.

Police evacuated residents near the house and it has angered some people.

"My husband, he needs his medicine," said Brown. "He needs his medicine… They made him leave in his pajamas. He has been sitting in his car on blood medicine. I want it fixed. Take care of the situation."

The stand-off made for quite a sight for residents, but they didn't like what they saw.

"It shouldn't be going on," said Albert Sims. "Just too much crime going on around here, too much."

There have been reports the man inside the house was the same man who was involved in a standoff a couple of weeks ago outside a store on Covington Pike, but so far Action News 5 hasn't been able to confirm that information.

Police declined to say how the man injured himself or what kind of injury he sustained.
