Mayor Luttrell continues family life series with Just Care Family Network

Shelby County Government continues to partner with faith-based organizations and other groups to host Mayor Mark Luttrell’s Family Life Series. Representatives from Shelby County Government and other agencies will speak at Keel Avenue Baptist Church during a five month series of presentations.

On May 16, the CDC issued its first comprehensive report on children's mental health describing federal activities that track children’s mental disorders in the United States.

Tonight’s series, led by Just Care Family Network Executive Director Dr. Altha Stewart, will aim at “Helping Children and Youth Affected by Crime and Violence”

Easy access to Memphis public pools

The City of Memphis has an easier for you and your family to take advantage of public community pools this summer. You will need a City Access Card to attend any City of Memphis pool. The cards are free and can be obtained at any Memphis Library. You can also use the card to check out books from any Memphis Public Library. You do not need to obtain a City Access Card if you were previously issued a City of Memphis Parks and Neighborhoods Pool identification card.

Local consignment store opens in new location

Summer Kids, a locally owned children’s consignment store, is now open at their new location. Now parents can continue finding great deals at 5266 Summer Ave. It is in the Perimeter Shopping Center, near Gardenridge, just to the left of Aaron's.

If you have baby or maternity items you want to sell, Summer Kids is starting to accept buying drop-offs at their new location on Friday, March 29. The most wanted items are jeans, spring maternity, shoes, baby equipment, boys clothes sizes 2T – 5, girls sizes 6-8, long-sleeve shirts, preemie & newborn clothes.

Permission granted to “KICK BUTTS”!

The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD), in collaboration with other local organizations, will encourage youth to take a stand against big tobacco companies and educate their peers about the importance of not smoking on Kick Butts Day, Wednesday, March 20.

Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism which empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against big tobacco companies. Health officials want to raise awareness of the tobacco problem, encourage youth to stay tobacco-free and urge strong action to protect kids from tobacco.

Representatives from the health department will be at the following locations on Wednesday, March 20, to distribute information and tips on smoking cessation:

• University of Memphis-University Center

1 p.m.

S.T.A.R. Academy nominated for national grant program

Sponsored by The Clorox Company, The Power A Bright Future program is giving you a chance to make a difference and win a grant for a school to give students the opportunity to thrive by exploring, creating and playing! S.T.A.R. Academy in Memphis has been nominated.

"S.T.A.R. Academy is now ranked #8 in the "Explore" category (out of a total of 2500 schools)...There are seven (7) $50,000 grants up for grabs (7 different categories) and each nominated school can move up by having people text a vote for them and/or online vote for them, once every 24-hr period," said the school's Social Media Coordinator Tecia Marshall.
