Continue the Holiday Cheer by Recycling Your Christmas Trees

Continue the Holiday Cheer by Recycling Your Christmas Trees

Once Santa and his reindeer have headed home and Christmas tree needles are scattered on the floor, it is time to toss the once fresh-smelling tree. The City of Memphis Storm Water Program wants to remind you to recycle your Christmas trees.

The City of Memphis Solid Waste Management Department will provide curbside pickup of live Christmas trees beginning Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. You may put your Christmas trees, minus stands, lights, ornaments and tinsel, at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the ninth for pickup throughout the week. All collected trees will be recycled into mulch and compost.

You may also drop off your Christmas trees at the Public Works Collins Yard facility or the Park Services Rodney Baber Facility.

Five credit "resolutions" for 2013

Forget those tired resolutions of losing weight or quitting smoking.

Resolve to clean up and manage your credit instead. Here's five steps toward making that happen, according to Lynn Henderson of LowCards.com:

* KNOW YOUR CREDIT REPORT LIKE THE BACK OF YOUR HAND. "Request the free annual copy of your credit report and go over it with a fine tooth comb to understand every little detail," said Henderson. "Look for inaccurate information, mistakes, fraud and any sign of identity theft. After reviewing your credit profile, you should know where you stand in terms of credit history and your actual credit score."

The Chickasaw Council of Boy Scouts are putting their forces behind the Mid-South Food Bank this holiday season.

Scouting for Food is an effort to feed families in need.

One in five Mid-Southerners struggle with food insecurity - that's a lack of sufficient food to meet basic needs.

"I think were going to have a record year. Not only have we filled up all the bins this year at this location, but we also picked up North Mississippi.

They had eight troop groups down there," said David Stephens of the Mid-South food bank.

This year, Kroger is also lending a hand by offering eight food collection sites.

The Mid-South Food Bank delivers more than one million pounds of food per month.
